As part of your regular schedule, you should be visiting the Windows Update site once a week or so, to keep your operating system up to date.  This applies to XP and Vista only.  Microsoft no longer supports and updates earlier versions.

But do not forget about Microsoft Office, which includes the popular Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  And there are other applications which must be kept up to date.

You can do all these updates in one convenient place.  Instead of going to Windows Update, go to Microsoft Update right here.  Click “Start Now” and follow the steps.  You may have to install some software for this update feature to run.

Click “Custom” rather than “Express”.  In this way, you will be able to avoid Internet Explorer 7 and the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, if you so desire.

You will usually not need your installation disks when updating Word, Excel, etc.  as the updates are most often security-related.
