You may have heard of that massive wave of spam called Storm, circulating on the Internet. It usually takes the form of a pump-and-dump stock scam, where you are urged to buy a penny stock.
When the price rises, the scammers sell their holdings and the price nosedives, leaving small investors holding the bag. It also takes the form of greeting cards.
The ultimate aim of the spam campaign is to unleash a trojan which ensnares your PC in a botnet, and then releases yet more spam and trojans. This is the most successful, widespread trojan ever. At first, you had to open an attachment in an email; now, just clicking a link can cause your computer to be infected.
So beware of unexpected greeting cards in your inbox. Do not open spam emails. Just delete them. Keep all your security programs up to date, as always.
Spam is usually cyclical in nature, reaching a climax in the final months of the year. Follow good email and surfing practices in the months ahead.
